How Microblading Works — Step-by-Step Process Explained
Microblading is a precise cosmetic tattooing technique that creates the appearance of fuller, more defined eyebrows. At Eyebrows by GG in Milford, Connecticut, every microblading appointment follows a careful, six-step process designed to maximize comfort, safety, and the natural look of your final result.
Understanding the Technique
Microblading uses a specialized hand-tool — not a tattoo machine — with ultra-fine micro-blades arranged in a row. The artist manually creates fine, hair-like strokes by gently depositing cosmetic pigment just beneath the skin’s surface.
Because the blades are extremely fine (much finer than tattoo needles) and the pigment is deposited at a shallower depth than traditional tattoos, microblading is semi-permanent. The pigment gradually fades over 1-3 years as your skin naturally exfoliates, rather than lasting a lifetime.
Step 1 — Free Consultation (15 Minutes)
Before booking, every client meets with GG for a free, no-pressure consultation. This is when we:
- Discuss your goals and expectations
- Assess your skin type and natural brow growth
- Review contraindications (pregnancy, certain medications, recent Botox)
- Recommend the right technique (microblading, nanoblading, powder, combo)
- Answer all your questions
If microblading isn’t right for you, we’ll be honest about it. Many consultations conclude with us recommending a different technique or no procedure at all.
Step 2 — Mapping (20-30 Minutes)
Mapping is one of the most important steps. GG carefully measures your face using calipers and rulers to find:
- The ideal starting point of each brow (in line with your nostril)
- The arch position (typically aligned with the outer iris)
- The endpoint (where a line from your outer nostril through your outer eye ends)
- Symmetry between your two brows (no two faces are perfectly symmetrical, so artistic adjustment is needed)
GG pencils in the proposed shape using brow pencil. You see and approve the shape before any pigment goes in. No surprises. We adjust until you love what you see.
Step 3 — Numbing (20 Minutes)
A topical numbing cream is applied to the brow area. We use a high-quality medical-grade anesthetic that takes effect within 15-20 minutes. By the time we begin, the area is fully comfortable.
A second numbing layer is applied during the procedure if needed.
Step 4 — Microblading (90 Minutes)
The actual procedure takes approximately 90 minutes for a full set of brows. GG works in small sections, depositing pigment in fine, hair-like strokes that:
- Match the direction of your natural brow hairs
- Match your natural hair color (or your desired tone)
- Build dimensional density by varying stroke depth and length
Most clients describe the sensation as mild scratching or pressure — not pain. The numbing cream remains effective throughout.
Step 5 — Aftercare Briefing (10 Minutes)
After the procedure, GG explains your aftercare protocol:
- Days 1-7 (sealing): Keep dry. Apply healing balm 2-3× daily.
- Days 8-14 (peeling): Scabbing and flaking — do NOT pick.
- Days 15-30 (settling): True color emerges around day 28.
- Day 42-56: Free 6-week perfecting session.
You receive a complimentary aftercare kit with everything needed for the first month.
Step 6 — 6-Week Perfecting Session (Free)
Six weeks after your initial microblading, you return for a free perfecting session. This is when we:
- Touch up any spots that didn’t take pigment evenly during initial healing
- Adjust shape if needed
- Add density to areas where strokes faded
- Review long-term aftercare for color longevity
After the perfecting session, your brows are fully settled and ready for normal life — including makeup, exercise, and sun exposure (with SPF).
How Long Microblading Lasts
Microblading typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on:
- Skin type (oily fades faster)
- Sun exposure (UV breaks down pigment)
- Skincare (acids, retinols accelerate fading)
- Lifestyle (frequent swimming/sweating reduces longevity)
Annual touch-ups ($400) maintain crisp shape and color.
