Does Microblading Hurt? An Honest Answer From a Licensed Tattoo Artist
The single most-asked question in 20+ years of practice. Here’s the honest answer — without sugarcoating, without scaring you off.
Short answer: Most clients rate microblading 2-4 on a 10-point pain scale. With proper topical numbing, the sensation is closer to “mild scratching” than “pain.” Many clients say they expected far worse.
The longer answer is more nuanced — and that’s what this guide is about.
What Microblading Actually Feels Like
The procedure has several stages, each with a different sensation:
Numbing application (5 minutes): Cool, slightly stinging cream applied to brow area. No pain.
Numbing wait (15-20 minutes): Tingling, then full numbness. No pain.
First strokes (15 seconds): Surprising. Your skin is mostly numb, so you feel pressure and a faint scratching but no sharp pain.
Mid-procedure: As numbing gradually wears off, sensation can become more noticeable. We reapply numbing cream as needed.
Sensitive areas (innermost brow, near nose): Slightly more sensitive than the body of the brow. We use extra numbing here.
End of procedure: Most clients are surprised it’s over.
Immediately after: Brow area feels mildly tender — like after a small sunburn or eyebrow waxing.
Why Microblading Hurts Less Than People Expect
Several factors keep microblading tolerable:
1. Topical numbing is highly effective. Modern topical anesthetics (lidocaine-based creams) numb skin more deeply than older formulations.
2. Shallow depth. Microblading deposits pigment in the upper dermal layer — much shallower than traditional tattooing. Less skin trauma = less pain.
3. Hand-tool, not machine. Manual blading vibrates less and feels gentler than tattoo machines.
4. Short procedure. 90 minutes total, with most of that time being mapping and consultation. Active blading is ~45 minutes split into multiple short sessions.
5. Continuous numbing. We reapply numbing cream during the procedure. You should never feel sharp pain — if you do, tell GG and we’ll add more numbing.
Pain Tolerance Varies — Here’s What Affects It
Some factors that influence individual pain perception:
- Sleep: Well-rested clients tolerate procedures better.
- Caffeine: Can amplify pain perception. Avoid 24h before.
- Alcohol: Thins blood (more bleeding) and lowers pain tolerance. Avoid 24h before.
- Hormonal cycle: Some women find pain higher in the days leading up to menstruation.
- General anxiety: Anxious clients perceive more pain. Practice slow breathing.
- Skin sensitivity: Some clients have naturally more sensitive skin (genetic).
- Pre-existing conditions: Rosacea, eczema, sensitive skin can amplify discomfort.
Comparing Microblading to Other Beauty Procedures
Subjective pain ranking (1-10 scale, with topical numbing where applicable):
| Procedure | Average Pain |
|—|—|
| Eyebrow waxing | 4-5 |
| Eyebrow threading | 3-4 |
| Microblading | 2-4 |
| Lip blush | 4-5 |
| Eyeliner tattoo | 5-6 |
| Brazilian wax | 7-8 |
| Tattoo (without numbing) | 6-8 |
Microblading is one of the more tolerable beauty procedures.
What If I’m Very Pain-Sensitive?
Options for highly pain-sensitive clients:
1. Strong topical numbing. We can apply additional layers and let them sit longer.
2. Take Tylenol 1 hour before. Acetaminophen reduces pain perception without thinning blood.
3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24-48 hours before.
4. Bring noise-canceling headphones. Music distracts from sensation.
5. Communicate during procedure. If you’re feeling more than you should, tell GG. We’ll pause and add more numbing.
6. Consider nanoblading instead. The thinner needle is slightly less aggressive than microblading blades.
What About After the Procedure?
Day of: Mild tenderness, like a sunburn. Most clients drive themselves home and resume normal activities.
Days 1-3: Slight swelling and redness — peaks at 24-48 hours, then subsides.
Days 4-14: No pain. Brows scab and peel but don’t hurt. The healing process is itchy at times — do not scratch.
Day 15+: No discomfort.
