What to Know Before Microblading — Pre-Procedure Checklist 2026
A clear, expert-built checklist for anyone booking microblading. What to skip in the 48 hours before, which medications to avoid, what to bring, and what your brows will…
Booking microblading is a small commitment with big visual consequences — your brows are the frame of your face for the next 12–24 months. The 48 hours before your appointment matter almost as much as the procedure itself. What you put on your skin, what you put in your body, and how prepared you arrive directly affects how your pigment retains and how cleanly your brows heal.
This is the same pre-procedure checklist we send to every new client at our Milford CT studio. Read it once before you book, and once more in the week leading up to your appointment.
1. Assess Your Skin Type Honestly
Microblading works best on normal-to-dry skin. The hair-stroke technique relies on the pigment settling cleanly into the upper dermis without spreading. Oily skin pushes pigment out faster and tends to blur fine strokes within 6–12 months — for very oily skin, powder brows or combo brows are often the better long-term choice.
Before booking, do a quick honest read on your skin:
- Dry / normal: classic microblading is a great fit
- Combination (oily T-zone, dry brow area): still a good candidate
- Very oily, especially in the brow zone: consider powder brows or combo
If you are unsure, mention it during booking. We can take a closer look during the consultation portion of your appointment and adjust the technique.
2. Stop These Medications and Supplements
Several common medications and supplements thin the blood, which increases bleeding during the procedure and reduces how much pigment your skin retains.
Stop 7 days before (with your doctor’s approval — never stop a prescribed medication on your own):
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen, naproxen, and other NSAIDs
- Fish oil and omega-3 supplements
- Vitamin E supplements
- Ginkgo biloba, garlic supplements, ginseng
Stop 24–48 hours before:
- Alcohol
- Caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout)
Do not stop without consulting your doctor:
- Prescription blood thinners (warfarin, Eliquis, Plavix, etc.) — discuss with us before booking
- Hormone medications
- Anti-seizure medications
If you are on a blood thinner you cannot pause, microblading may not be safe. Powder brows can sometimes be a better alternative — we will walk through it in your consultation.
3. Patch Test for Allergies
Allergic reactions to microblading pigment are rare but real. We use FDA-compliant pigments and offer patch testing for any client with a history of:
- Tattoo or hair-dye allergies
- Sensitivity to nickel or metals
- Reactive skin (eczema, severe rosacea)
- Multiple cosmetic allergies
The patch test takes 5 minutes and we read it after 24–48 hours. Mention any allergy history during booking and we will schedule the patch test in advance.
4. The 48-Hour Pre-Care Rules
Forty-eight hours before your appointment:
- No alcohol
- No retinol, retinoids, or vitamin C serums on or near the brow
- No exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, glycolic, salicylic) on the brow area
- No tweezing, waxing, or threading the brow you are getting microbladed
- No Botox or filler in the brow / forehead area
- Avoid intense sun, tanning beds, or sunburn
Twenty-four hours before:
- Hydrate well — drink water steadily through the day
- Eat a substantial meal before you arrive (no fasting)
- Sleep at least 7 hours if you can
5. Day-Of Preparation
The morning of your appointment:
- Eat a real breakfast — protein and carbs, not just coffee
- Bring a snack and water
- Take an antihistamine (Claritin, Zyrtec) if you tend to swell
- Skip caffeine
- Wear a comfortable top — no high collars or anything you have to pull over your head
- Come with a clean face — no makeup on the brow area
Arrive 10 minutes early. The first part of your appointment is mapping and shape design, which is the most important step — we want time to do it right.
6. Pigment Options and Color Choice
During mapping, we will discuss pigment options. Your color is matched to your natural brow hair, your hair color, and your skin undertone. We typically use a blend of two or three pigments to create depth that mimics natural hair.
A few notes:
- Microblading pigments fade warmer over 12–18 months. We start slightly cooler than your goal so the healed result lands where you want it.
- If you dye your hair, mention your typical color (and how often you change it).
- Bring a photo of your usual brow look — pencil, pomade, however you wear them.
7. Cost Expectations
At our Milford CT studio, microblading is priced as a package: the initial session plus the 6–8 week perfecting touch-up. Both are required for a complete result. Pricing across Connecticut typically ranges $400–$900 for the package. Be skeptical of any artist offering $200 microblading — that signals shortcuts on pigment quality, sterilization, or training.

8. Healing Preview — What Your Brows Will Look Like
Plan ahead. Your brows go through visible changes for the first 14 days.
- Days 1–3: Brows look bold, dark, and slightly swollen. This is normal.
- Days 4–7: Scabbing begins. The brows will look darker before they look right.
- Days 8–14: Scabs flake off. Brows look much lighter — sometimes alarmingly so. This is the “ghosting” phase.
- Days 14–30: Color rebuilds as the deeper pigment surfaces. By day 30, you see the true result.
- Week 6–8: Perfecting touch-up to refine shape, color, and any spots that healed unevenly.
If you have a major event in the next 30 days — a wedding, a photo shoot, a vacation — book your microblading at least 8 weeks before, so the touch-up is complete first.
For the full healing journey, see our 30-day microblading aftercare guide.
9. What to Bring
Keep it simple:
- Photo ID (we verify state ID for procedure consent)
- A reference photo of your typical brow look
- A snack and water
- Sunglasses for the walk to the car (eyes can be light-sensitive after)
- Your phone charger if you want to listen to music
- A list of any medications, allergies, and skin conditions
10. Post-Procedure Logistics
Plan the next 10 days lightly:
- No gym for 7 days (sweat disrupts healing)
- No swimming, saunas, or hot tubs for 14 days
- No facials, peels, or microneedling for 30 days
- Sleep on your back or in a way that does not press on your brows for 5 days
- No makeup or skincare on the brow area for 7 days
> “Most healing problems I see come from people who try to skip the first 10 days. The aftercare window is short. Treat it seriously and your brows will look beautiful for the next two years.” — GG, Licensed Tattoo Artist
A Quick Note on Pain
We get this question constantly: yes, we use a topical numbing cream before and during the procedure. Most clients describe the sensation as mild scratching pressure, not sharp pain. If you have a low pain tolerance, mention it during booking and we will plan a longer numbing window. Our does microblading hurt guide has a full breakdown.
