How to Find Your Perfect Eyebrow Shape — Face Shape Guide
The right eyebrow shape balances your face. The wrong shape distorts proportions, ages you, or simply looks unflattering. Here’s how to identify your face shape and match it to the most flattering brow shape.
Step 1: Identify Your Face Shape
Look in a mirror with hair pulled back. Measure (or estimate):
- Face length (chin to hairline)
- Forehead width
- Cheekbone width
- Jawline width
Compare these to identify your face shape:
Round Face
- Width and length similar
- Soft, curved jawline
- Full cheeks
- Width is at the cheekbones
- Goal: Lengthen and add structure
Oval Face
- Length is greater than width
- Forehead slightly wider than jaw
- Curved jawline
- Often considered the “ideal” proportion
- Goal: Maintain balance
Square Face
- Strong, angular jawline
- Forehead, cheekbones, and jaw similar width
- Strong corners
- Goal: Soften angles, add curves
Heart-Shaped Face
- Wider forehead, narrower jaw
- Prominent cheekbones
- Pointed chin
- Goal: Soften forehead, add to lower face
Oblong/Long Face
- Length significantly greater than width
- Forehead, cheekbones, and jaw similar width
- Long appearance
- Goal: Add width, shorten visual length
Diamond Face
- Cheekbones widest point
- Narrow forehead and jawline
- Pointed chin
- Goal: Balance forehead and jaw width
Step 2: Match Brow Shape to Face Shape
Round Face → Angular, Lifted Brows
A higher arch creates vertical lines that lengthen the face. Avoid soft, rounded brows that mirror face curves.
Best: Defined arch, slight lift.
Avoid: Flat or rounded brows.
Oval Face → Soft Arch, Natural Shape
Most brow shapes flatter oval faces. Lean toward soft arches that maintain natural proportions.
Best: Soft arch, slightly tapered.
Avoid: Severely angular shapes (overcorrects).
Square Face → Soft, Curved Arch
Soft arches counter strong jawlines. Avoid overly angular brows that compete with face structure.
Best: Curved or rounded arch, full body.
Avoid: Sharp angles or thin brows.
Heart-Shaped Face → Rounded, Slightly Shorter Brows
Slightly shorter, rounded brows balance a wider forehead.
Best: Soft, rounded shape with gentle arch.
Avoid: Very long brows or high arches.
Oblong/Long Face → Flat, Horizontal Brows
Flat brows visually shorten face length.
Best: Straight, horizontal shape with minimal arch.
Avoid: High arches or thin brows.
Diamond Face → Curved Brows With Soft Arch
Curved brows soften prominent cheekbones.
Best: Soft arch with rounded body.
Avoid: Sharp angles or straight lines.
Step 3: Three Critical Brow Measurements
Regardless of face shape, every brow has three key points:
Starting point: Should align with the outer edge of your nostril (vertically). Brows starting before this make features look closer together.
Arch peak: Should align with the outer edge of your iris (looking straight ahead). Arches outside this position look unnatural.
Endpoint: Should align with a diagonal line from the outer nostril through the outer corner of your eye. Endpoints longer or shorter than this throw off proportions.
GG measures these points during mapping for every microblading session.
Step 4: Custom Mapping vs Templates
Avoid stencils or template brows. Every face is unique. Even people with the same “face shape” benefit from custom mapping based on:
- Bone structure
- Eye shape and spacing
- Nose proportions
- Existing natural brow growth
- Personal aesthetic preferences
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Overplucking the front edge (creates wide-set look)
2. Arch too high or too far back (looks surprised)
3. Endpoint too short (face looks rounder)
4. Endpoint too long (drags eyes downward)
5. Too thin overall (ages the face)
6. Ignoring asymmetry (every face is asymmetric — over-correction looks artificial)
