Lip Blush vs Permanent Lipstick — What’s the Real Difference?

Most clients book “lip blush” expecting the result to look like worn-in lipstick. Most are surprised by how lightweight the actual result reads — and that’s the point.

If you’re researching lip cosmetic tattoo, you’ve probably seen both terms used interchangeably online. They’re not the same. This article explains the technical difference, the visual difference, and which one you most likely want.

Written by Gonul Gonenc (GG), Connecticut Licensed Tattoo Artist at Eyebrows by GG in Milford, CT.

The Short Answer

Lip blush = soft diffused color that enhances your natural lip tone. Reads as “good lip color” not “wearing lipstick.”

Permanent lipstick (sometimes called “full lip color”) = saturated, defined lip color that reads exactly like wearing lipstick. Higher pigment density, sharper border, more dramatic.

Same machine. Same pigments. Different technique, different layering, different final look.

Lip Blush — The Detail

Lip blush at Eyebrows by GG uses a cosmetic tattoo machine to apply pigment in light, diffused passes across the entire lip surface. Color is built up gradually — typically over 2–3 layers in the same session.

Result:

  • Lips look ~30–50% more saturated than your natural color
  • The lip border is softly defined, not lined
  • Color reads as “natural lip tone, slightly enhanced”
  • Most people who see you won’t realize you’ve had any procedure done — they’ll just think your lips look balanced and bright

Best for: Clients with naturally pale or pinky-brown lips who want subtle enhancement, asymmetry correction, or a “wake up with sheer lipstick” effect.

Permanent Lipstick — The Detail

Permanent lipstick uses the same equipment but with denser pigment passes and a defined border line. Color is built up to 80–100% saturation of a specific lipstick shade.

Result:

  • Lips look like you’re wearing matte lipstick at all times
  • The lip border is sharp and visible
  • Color reads as “she’s wearing red/berry/coral”
  • Even close friends will notice

Best for: Clients who currently wear lipstick daily and want to skip the daily application — particularly older clients with thinning lip color and sharp aesthetic preferences.

Side-by-Side Comparison

| | Lip Blush | Permanent Lipstick |

|–|———|———-|

| Saturation | 30–50% | 80–100% |

| Border | Softly defined | Sharp |

| Reads as | “Healthy lips” | “Lipstick worn” |

| Color picks | Neutral nude, rosy, mauve | Bold reds, berries, corals |

| Daily makeup compatibility | Easy to top with gloss/lipstick | Difficult to layer over |

| Healing time | 4–5 days darker, then lightens | 7–10 days darker, then lightens |

| Lasts | 2–4 years | 3–5 years |

What Most Clients Actually Want

In our 20+ years at Eyebrows by GG, we’ve found that 80% of clients who ask for “permanent lipstick” actually want lip blush. They’ve seen the term online but want a soft natural result, not a permanently lipsticked look.

This is one reason the free 15-minute consultation matters. We’ll show you healed lip blush results vs healed full-color results so you can decide based on what your actual face will look like, not on what an Instagram filter shows.

What Both Have in Common

  • Topical numbing protocol (mild discomfort)
  • Both performed with single-use sterile cartridges and FDA-compliant pigments
  • 6-week perfecting session included (refines color saturation post-heal)
  • Color test patch in the consultation phase
  • Cold sore (HSV) precautions — antiviral prescription if you have a history

Healing Process

Both lip blush and permanent lipstick follow the same general healing arc, but at different intensities:

  • Days 1–4: Lips are darker than final result — sometimes dramatically. Don’t panic.
  • Days 5–10: Peel and lighten phase. Color appears “gone” briefly.
  • Weeks 2–4: Color blooms back as deeper layers settle.
  • Week 6: Perfecting session — refine saturation, fix any unevenness.

The peel phase is more intense for permanent lipstick (more pigment to settle). Plan a quiet weekend if you’ve gone the full-color route.

Which Should You Choose?

Honest framework:

Choose lip blush if:

  • You don’t currently wear lipstick daily
  • You want enhancement, not transformation
  • You’d describe your taste as “minimalist”
  • Your natural lip color is uneven or pale

Choose permanent lipstick if:

  • You wear lipstick every day already
  • You have a specific color you love and want as your “default”
  • You want dramatic, intentional lip color
  • You’re tired of reapplying or smudging
