Permanent Makeup Removal — Options, Costs, Realistic Expectations

If you have permanent makeup you no longer want, removal is possible. This guide explains your options realistically — including what removal can and can’t achieve.

Why Clients Want Permanent Makeup Removed

Common reasons:

1. Aged-out work: PMU done 3-5 years ago that has shifted color or shape
2. Botched work: Asymmetric, off-color, or unnatural results from inexperienced artists
3. Style changes: Brow trends evolve; thin 90s shapes outdated
4. Color migration: Pigment that shifted to undesirable tones (orange, blue-gray)
5. Allergic reactions: Rare but possible reactions to pigment
6. Personal preference: Decided permanent makeup isn’t for you

Saline Removal — Our Specialty

At Eyebrows by GG, we offer saline-based PMU removal at $150 per session.

How it works: A specialized saline solution is implanted into the skin (similar to PMU procedure) where existing pigment lives. The saline lifts pigment to the skin surface where it scabs and falls away during healing.

Pros:

  • Gentle — minimal trauma to skin
  • No scarring risk (when done correctly)
  • Color-neutral (no risk of laser pigment shifting)
  • Affordable per session
  • Can be done in-house at our studio

Cons:

  • Multiple sessions required (typically 2-5)
  • Slow process (6-8 weeks between sessions)
  • Best on lighter, faded PMU
  • Less effective on very saturated, deep PMU

Laser Tattoo Removal

For deep, saturated, or recent PMU, laser tattoo removal may be more efficient.

How it works: Laser energy fragments pigment particles, which are then absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system.

Pros:

  • Faster results per session
  • Effective on deep/saturated PMU
  • Established medical technology

Cons:

  • Risk of pigment shifting (especially on lip blush — can cause permanent darkening)
  • More expensive per session ($150-$400)
  • Some discomfort during procedure
  • Risk of scarring with inexperienced operators
  • Color shifts in skin pigmentation

We don’t perform laser removal in-house but can refer you to specialized providers in Connecticut.

Saline Removal Process at Eyebrows by GG

Per session (~60-90 minutes):

1. Consultation about expectations
2. Topical numbing (20 min)
3. Saline implantation in pigmented area (30-45 min)
4. Aftercare briefing
5. 6-week healing window before next session

Aftercare:

  • Days 1-7: Keep dry, apply healing balm
  • Days 8-14: Scabbing and pigment lift
  • Days 15-30: Settling

After healing, you can assess whether another session is needed.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Estimating before starting is approximate. Factors:

Likely 1-2 sessions:

  • Faded, old PMU
  • Light pigment saturation
  • Surface-level deposit

Likely 3-5 sessions:

  • Recent, deep PMU
  • Heavy saturation
  • Deep pigment deposit
  • Multiple-layer original work

Possibly more:

  • Original work done by aggressive techniques
  • Specific pigment types (some are stubborn)
  • Repeated re-tattooing over years

Realistic budget for full removal: $300-$750 across 2-5 sessions.

When Removal Is the Wrong Solution

Removal isn’t always the best path. Consider alternatives:

1. Color correction: If existing PMU has shifted color (e.g., orange or gray), color correction overlays adjust tones rather than removing entirely. Less expensive, faster.

2. Cover-up: New PMU applied over old can mask less-saturated existing work. Best with recent, lighter old work.

3. Wait for natural fading: PMU naturally fades 1-3 years. If you have 12+ months until total fade, waiting may be free.

4. Camouflage with makeup: Sometimes the simplest answer.

GG will discuss whether removal is your best option during consultation.

Saline Removal Aftercare

Same as PMU aftercare with one addition:

  • Days 1-3: Saline scab forms, may look dramatic
  • Days 4-14: Scab lifts pigment as it falls
  • Days 15-30: Skin heals

Critical: Do NOT pick the scab. The scab IS the removal — picking removes it prematurely and reduces results.

What Removal CAN’T Do

Honest expectations:

1. 100% removal isn’t always possible. Some pigment may always be visible, especially for very deep or saturated work.

2. Color shifting can happen. Some pigments respond unpredictably to removal techniques.

3. Skin texture changes are possible. Multiple sessions can leave faint scarring or texture changes (rare but real).

4. Time and patience required. Total removal can take 3-9 months.

Cost Comparison

Saline (at Eyebrows by GG):

  • Per session: $150
  • Typical total: $300-$750 (2-5 sessions)

Laser (referred):

  • Per session: $150-$400
  • Typical total: $450-$1,200 (3-5 sessions)
